THE FUTURE FADES
Why is it that I can see with great clarity moments in my history
While visions of a future fade?
Moments remembered:
The grid metal of a floor furnace in our home
Imprinted as a scar on my right calf when I was 2
The giant leap off the ledge of our front porch when I was 5
Transformed to a small step down for a grown man
Staring up from the floor, at the radio blaring, The Lone Ranger
It became a waist-high piece of furniture much later
The morning of the day Grandpa died; I was only 4
The cries in the halls as my parents wept
10-year-old me slapping mud on my face in the backyard
Aunt Julia picks me up and tells me to stop
The moment in a room, saying goodbye
To a sister whose mind worked differently
Moments Unseen:
The agenda for today, much less for tomorrow.
Our Anniversary Day – now approaching 60 years.
Where I am going, for just a moment, waiting for the light to turn green.
And of course, where I put my keys and my glasses.
